We are very fortunate that Rasmus Lerdorf has volunteered to speak while he is in town!
For those who don't know, here is Rasmus Lerdorf's short bio:
Rasmus Lerdorf is known for having gotten the PHP project off the ground in 1995. He is also a member of the Apache Server core development team and a member of the Apache Foundation board of directors, and has contributed to a number of other open source projects over the years. He has also been an engineer at Yahoo! He was born in Greenland, grew up in Denmark and Canada and has a Systems Design engineering degree from the University of Waterloo. Mr. Lerdorf is a frequent speaker on PHP and Open Source at conferences around the world.
The meeting will be on Thursday March 18 instead of our usual second week of the month. We are planning on the same time, refreshments at 6:30pm and presentation at 7:00pm.
There will be a big crowd for this so we are arranging for a bigger room than our usual one. The meeting will be held in the Mailman-Hollywood building.
About the Presentation:
There has been a lot of interest in PHP performance lately spurred by Facebook's HipHop PHP announcement in February. Most people don't know how fast their site is and will make uninformed architecture decisions or spend time optimizing the wrong things based mostly on myths and innuendo. This talk will try to get you started down the path of a systematic approach to benchmarking, profiling and optimizing your entire web site. If there is time and interest, we'll have a look at Web security as well. Most of the concepts covered are not PHP-specific, but I will of course be using PHP to illustrate concepts.
SPREAD THE WORD!
As always, FLUX events are free and open to the public. Let your co-workers know, and anybody else who does web development, even on those other operating systems!
